2009 Stimulus Bill Creates Federal Tax Credit for Electric Car Purchase*

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) allows new GEM battery-electric vehicles purchased after February 17, 2009 and before January 1, 2012 to be eligible for the Qualified Plug-In Electric Vehicle Credit under Internal Revenue Code Section 30.
Taxpayer need to talk to their personal tax advisor for guidance on their specific situations, and any tax benefit from the tax credit for a qualifying 2008 GEM purchase will not be finalized until their 2009 Federal Income Tax Return is processed. Per the ARRA 2009, the federal tax credit applies to purchases from February 17, 2009 until December 31, 2011, but Washington may legislate differently at any point.
“This is a win-win-win – for today's GEM car buyers, for the environment, and for the country” said GEM President and COO Rick Kasper. “People who buy GEM cars today will really benefit in many ways. This Tax credit may save qualifying buyers between seven-hundred and fifteen-hundred dollars, depending upon which of our six GEM models they buy and their specific tax situation.”
There are nearly 40,000 100% electric zero-emission- and street-legal- GEM cars on the road to date, enjoyed by individuals consumers, college campuses, corporations, sports teams and facilities, state and local governments, and federal agencies, including military.

Hundreds of colleges and universities nationwide are driving GEM batter-electric cars to “green” their campuses, save money, and attract potential students like Ally who want to choose schools that are eco-friendly. Campuses may benefit from provisions of ARRA 2009 as well, for alternative fuel, zero-emission and electric vehicles.
Larry Lane of University North Carolina- Charlotte said, “We use a fleet of GEM vehicles all over campus, including several set up with toolboxes and ladder racks, to use on a 24/7 basis,” adding, “It costs a couple of dollars a week to charge a GEM car, and they require much less maintenance than their gas-powered counterparts.”
With lifecycle costs about one-third of gas-powered vehicles, GEM cars are much more economical in price and fuel consumption. GEM vehicles also have many of the same safety features of traditional automobiles (such as three-point seat belts, automotive windshields safety glass, horn, mirrors and headlights), making them a safe and ideal choice for short-distance driving.
GEM 100% battery-electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emission. To date, GEM cars have been driven over 300 million emission-free miles, and have saved over 15 million gallons of gas. They have also prevented over 180 tons of ozone-producing pollutants from reaching the air.
